Chefchaouen and Tetouan are the twin highlights of the Rif region, both reachable from a Tangier base, and they make a natural pairing precisely because they are so different. Chefchaouen, perched at 600 m in the mountains, is the famous Blue Pearl — a compact, photogenic medina washed in every shade of indigo, with cool air, a relaxed pace and hiking trails to the Akchour waterfalls nearby. Tetouan, an hour north toward the coast, is the 'White Dove': a whitewashed Andalusian city founded by refugees from Spain, whose UNESCO-listed medina is the most complete and least touristed in Morocco, full of working craft ateliers. Chefchaouen sells colour and mountain serenity; Tetouan sells authenticity and Andalusian heritage. Together they form a superb two-stop loop from Tangier.
