Why Essaouira
Essaouira (Mogador on old maps) is the coast Morocco's deep south does best, and it rhymes with home: like Tangier and Asilah it is a walled Atlantic port of whitewash and salt wind, but set far down by Marrakech rather than the strait. Its 18th-century ramparts stood in for Astapor in Game of Thrones; its small blue-and-white medina is calmer than Marrakech; and the gusty beach pulls kite-surfers year-round. It also opens the argan road and the oyster lagoons of Oualidia. For travellers who loved the sea light of the north, Essaouira is where the Atlantic returns to a southern itinerary.
What to see
Portuguese cannon walls braced against the Atlantic — the same maritime-fortress story that built Asilah and the bastions of the north, here standing in as Astapor for Game of Thrones.
Choose from the morning's catch and have it grilled in front of you at the port stalls — every bit the equal of the harbour fish we eat back in Tangier, and arguably Morocco's freshest.
A women's co-op on the road in from Marrakech, where argan oil is still cracked and pressed by hand — the southern argan country, a long way from the northern olive groves.
Long empty beaches to the south and the oyster-farming lagoon of Oualidia to the north along the Atlantic littoral.

Two days on the windward Atlantic: argan cooperatives, an oyster lunch at Oualidia and sunset on the ramparts — the south's seafaring coast for travellers who came to Morocco by the northern sea.

An overnight beats a day trip — the 3-hour drive each way leaves only 4–5 hours on the coast. Two nights is ideal, long enough to settle into the same unhurried port rhythm you'd find up north in Asilah.
You can, but it's windy and the Atlantic stays cool all year — much like the sea off Tangier. For warmer, calmer water, head south to Sidi Kaouki or on to Agadir.
