Why Sahara & Merzouga

Nothing on the Mediterranean shore prepares you for Erg Chebbi: a 22 km field of orange dunes near Merzouga, rising up to 150m above the hammada at the country's far south-east. From Tangier it is a serious haul — most travellers reach it after working south through Fes and the imperial cities, then either drive 9 hours from Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka via the Dadès and Todra gorges, or fly to Errachidia and drive 2 hours. The reward is one of the most cinematic landscapes on earth and a night under canvas with Berber hosts — the polar opposite of a Tangier sea-breeze evening, and all the more striking for the distance travelled.

What to see

Highlights of Sahara & Merzouga.

01

Camel trek into the dunes

A 60–90 minute ride out from the village to camp, best timed for late afternoon when the sand turns copper — the slow desert pace that the bustle of the north never knows.

02

Luxury desert camp

Canvas suites with real beds and en-suite bathrooms, a candlelit dinner and gnaoua players around the fire — silence and stars where a northern night would bring sea air and Spanish café chatter.

03

Sunrise climb to the high dune

Up at 5:30 to climb 150m of sand and watch the sun rise over Algeria — the country's far edge, about as distant from the strait of Gibraltar as Morocco gets.

04

Erg Chigaga (the wilder alternative)

Further south again, reached from M'Hamid by 4x4 — quieter, fewer camps, harder won. Our pick for travellers who've already crossed the country once and want the deeper desert.

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: From the north, work south via Fes and Marrakech; then a 9h drive to Merzouga (split over 2 days), or fly to Errachidia.
  • What to pack: Layers (cold nights even in summer), scarf for blowing sand, headlamp, slip-on shoes.
  • Connectivity: Mobile signal at the camp edge, no Wi-Fi at most camps — by design.

FAQ

Sahara & Merzougacommon questions.

Can I reach the Sahara quickly from the north?+

Not quickly — the real dunes (Erg Chebbi / Chigaga) sit at the far south-east, well beyond Marrakech. From Tangier the sensible approach is to descend through Fes and the imperial cities first, then cross to Merzouga, rather than rushing. The nearest desert substitute is the Agafay stone desert by Marrakech, lovely but not the Sahara.

Is it too hot in summer?+

July–August daytime temperatures regularly top 45°C and camps close or move — a punishing contrast to the breezy northern coast in the same months. October–April is the season; March and November are ideal.

Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga?+

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is more accessible with more camps. Erg Chigaga is wilder, quieter and needs a 4x4 — the better choice for travellers who have already made the long journey down from the north and want the remoter dunes.
