It is the question that catches out many travellers landing in Tangier: can I see the Sahara too? Geographically, the answer is sobering. Tangier sits at the very top of Morocco on the Strait of Gibraltar, while the great dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga lie roughly 900 km to the south-east — a journey of two days each way by road, or a flight south plus a long transfer. Staying in the north keeps everything close: Chefchaouen's blue lanes, Tetouan's Andalusian medina, Asilah's beaches and Cap Spartel are all within about two hours of Tangier. Reaching the Sahara means committing the better part of a week to travel and the desert itself. The dunes are extraordinary and worth it for those with time — but on a short northern trip, they are simply too far. This comparison is about being honest with your calendar.
