Season by season on the Strait

Tangier sits where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, so its climate is milder and breezier than inland Morocco. The sea moderates the heat in summer and the chill in winter, and the famous Levante and Poniente winds off the Strait of Gibraltar shape every day on the coast.

  • Spring (Mar–Jun): the sweet spot — green hills behind the city, comfortable medina walking, calm seas for Cap Spartel.
  • Summer (Jul–Aug): warm and lively, beaches busy with Moroccan and Spanish visitors; the Levante wind can whip up the coast for days.
  • Autumn (Sep–Oct): a second peak — warm sea, soft light over the kasbah, fewer crowds than midsummer.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): mild and green but wet and grey at times; Atlantic storms roll in, and the café terraces of the Petit Socco come into their own.

Best time by activity

For Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules, late spring through early autumn gives the calmest seas and the clearest views across to Spain. The blue lanes of Chefchaouen, two and a half hours south through the Rif, photograph best in spring and autumn when the light is soft and the day-trip coaches thinner.

Asilah and the Atlantic beaches south of Tangier are at their best from June to September, when the water warms and the whitewashed ramparts glow. For city walking — the medina, the Grand and Petit Socco, the Kasbah Museum — almost any month works, but you will be most comfortable outside the deep heat and the wettest winter weeks.

Things that move the dates

Ramadan shifts each year (it falls in the late-February-to-March window through the late 2020s) and changes the rhythm of the day — many cafés and restaurants adjust hours, though tourist hotels and tours run normally. The TANJAzz festival brings live music to Tangier in September, and the Asilah Arts Festival paints fresh murals on the medina walls each summer; both are worth planning around. Ferry traffic from Spain peaks during the Marhaba crossing of the diaspora in July and August.

Frequently asked

What is the cheapest time to visit Tangier?

Late autumn and winter (November to February) outside the holidays bring the lowest hotel rates and quiet beaches. June and September sit just outside the busy midsummer peak and offer warm weather at better value.

When is Tangier too hot or too windy?

Tangier rarely gets oppressively hot thanks to the sea, but the Levante wind off the Strait can blow strongly for days in summer, kicking up the beaches. If you want calm water, aim for late spring or early autumn.

Is winter a good time to visit Tangier?

Yes for atmosphere — mild days, green Rif hills and the literary café terraces almost to yourself — but expect Atlantic rain and grey spells, and pack a warm layer for the breeze coming off the Strait.
