The lighthouse at Cap Spartel above the Strait of Gibraltar — Tangier Tours

Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules: where two seas meet

A short drive west of Tangier, the city gives way to the wooded Cape, a 19th-century lighthouse and the famous Africa-shaped cave above the Atlantic. Here is how to spend the half day well.

Cap Spartel is the north-western tip of mainland Africa — the point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea at the mouth of the Strait of Gibraltar. It is only 14 km west of Tangier, through the cool wooded hills of the Montagne district, and it makes the perfect half-day escape from the medina: a lighthouse on a headland, sea on three sides, and below it the most photographed cave in Morocco.

Two stops, one short drive

The classic circuit pairs two sights a few minutes apart. Cap Spartel itself is the headland and lighthouse, with the symbolic meeting of two seas and long views back along the coast. The Caves of Hercules, just below toward the Atlantic beaches, are the dramatic finish. We recommend the lighthouse first for the morning light, then the caves, then a long lunch on the Atlantic shore.

Cap Spartel: the lighthouse and the headland

The lighthouse at Cap Spartel was built in 1864 and still guards the western entrance to the Strait. From the headland you have the open Atlantic to the west and the Strait curving east toward Tangier and, on a clear day, the Spanish coast. The wooded slopes of the Cape — villas, eucalyptus and umbrella pines — are a world away from the city, which is part of the appeal.

For walkers, paths drop from the headland toward the shore. We can build a coastal walk into a longer guided programme.

The Caves of Hercules

A few minutes below the cape, the Caves of Hercules open onto the Atlantic. The cave is partly natural, partly carved — for centuries Berber stone-cutters quarried circular discs here for millstones, and the marks are still visible in the walls. Its most famous feature is the sea-facing mouth, whose outline is said to resemble the map of Africa. Legend places Hercules here, resting during his labours, before he split the mountains and opened the Strait.

Go in the morning when the cave is quieter and the light through the Africa-shaped opening is best. A small entry fee applies; the path in is short and easy.

Lunch on the Atlantic shore

The beach restaurants below Cap Spartel are, reliably, a highlight. With the Atlantic in front of you, the order is grilled fish — sea bass, sole, prawns — that came in that morning, with Moroccan salads and bread. A relaxed lunch costs about US$15–25 per person. In summer the beaches fill with families; in spring and autumn you can have long stretches of sand almost to yourself.

Practical logistics

The standard half day runs a late-morning departure from Tangier and a mid-afternoon return, or a full day if you add a long lunch and a coastal walk. We always use a licensed driver-guide who combines the driving with local knowledge of the Cape and its legends. Bring a windproof layer — the headland catches the Atlantic breeze even on warm days — and sunscreen.

A word on the road: the coast road to Cap Spartel is paved throughout and manageable in any car. The whole circuit is short, very well established and entirely safe — it is the single most popular excursion from Tangier for good reason.

Combining with the city

Because the circuit is so short, many guests pair it with a morning in the kasbah and medina, making a full and varied day. On a longer stay we combine Cap Spartel with a day trip to Asilah or Chefchaouen for a fuller picture of the north. We include these combinations as options in several of our Tangier-based itineraries.

Frequently asked

How far is Cap Spartel from Tangier?

Cap Spartel is about 14 km west of central Tangier — roughly 25–30 minutes by car along the coast road through the wooded Cape hills (the 'Montagne' district). The Caves of Hercules sit a little below the cape, a few minutes further down toward the Atlantic beaches. The whole circuit is an easy half day.

What are the Caves of Hercules?

The Caves of Hercules are a natural sea cave complex below Cap Spartel, partly enlarged over centuries by Berber stone-cutters who quarried discs for millstones. Their most famous feature is the sea-facing opening said to resemble the outline of Africa (or, by some accounts, a map of the continent). Legend ties the cave to Hercules, who rested here during his labours. A small entry fee applies.

Is Cap Spartel really where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean?

Cap Spartel marks the north-western corner of mainland Africa, at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar where the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea meet. The point is marked by a 19th-century lighthouse. The exact 'line' between the two seas is more symbolic than precise, but standing at the cape you genuinely have ocean to your west and the Strait to your east.

What is the best time of year for the Cap Spartel day trip?

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal — warm, clear and breezy, with good light on the Atlantic. Summer is busy with beachgoers along the Atlantic shore below the cape. Winter can be dramatic and wild, with big Atlantic swells crashing below the lighthouse, but bring a windproof layer.

Can you swim near Cap Spartel?

Yes — the Atlantic beaches just south of the cape (toward the Caves of Hercules and beyond) are long and sandy, popular in summer. The Atlantic here has surf and currents, so swim where others do and heed any flags. The water is cooler than the Mediterranean side of the city.

How much does a private Cap Spartel and Caves of Hercules day trip cost?

A fully private half-day with a licensed driver-guide typically costs US$90–150 per vehicle (not per person), depending on the itinerary and vehicle. This covers transport and guiding; lunch at one of the Atlantic beach restaurants is additional (budget US$15–25 per person). Shared tours are cheaper but fix the route and timing.
