Why there is no train to Chefchaouen
It is worth saying plainly, because so many people search for it: no railway reaches Chefchaouen. The town sits high in the Rif Mountains, off the rail corridor entirely. ONCF's network — including Tangier's gleaming Al Boraq high-speed line, Africa's first — runs south down the Atlantic plain to Kenitra, Rabat and Casablanca, not east into the mountains. So Tangier is as far as the train goes; from there, everyone reaches the blue city by bus, taxi or car.
The CTM coach from Tangier to Chefchaouen
For independent travellers on a budget, the CTM coach is the most reliable public option. CTM runs modern, air-conditioned buses from its Tangier terminal up to Chefchaouen in around three hours, with only a handful of departures a day — so this leg sells out, especially in summer and at weekends. Book your seat in advance online or at the counter, arrive fifteen minutes early, and keep small coins for the luggage-handling fee. Avoid the cheaper, slower local lines for this run; the CTM service is worth the small premium.
Shared grand taxis via Tétouan
The fastest cheap option is the grand taxi, the shared cream-coloured Mercedes that link Moroccan towns. There is rarely a direct Tangier–Chefchaouen taxi, so the usual route is to take one to Tétouan (about 45 minutes on the motorway) and change there for a second taxi up to Chefchaouen. Each leg leaves when the car fills — six passengers — so there is some waiting, but the whole trip still runs around two to two and a half hours. You can also hire the entire taxi to skip the wait and the change; agree the price before you set off.
Private car and transfer — and why it is often the smart choice
A private transfer covers Tangier to Chefchaouen in about two hours, door to door, leaving when you like with no timetable to chase and no change in Tétouan. For two to four people the per-head cost narrows sharply against separate bus and taxi fares — and you gain the thing the coach cannot offer: the freedom to stop on the Rif passes for the long view down to the valley, and to arrive with the whole afternoon free in the medina.
This is the route we run most often as a day trip: leave Tangier mid-morning, walk the blue lanes and the Plaza Uta el-Hammam, climb to the Spanish Mosque for the late-light view over the town, and be back on the coast by evening. If you would rather slow down, an overnight lets you catch the blue at dawn before the day visitors arrive — the hour the photographs are made.
Day trip or overnight?
At roughly two hours each way, Chefchaouen works comfortably as a single full day from Tangier — most of our guests do exactly that. An overnight is the better choice if you want the empty, blue-lit early morning, or if you are continuing south afterwards toward Fes rather than doubling back to the coast. Either way, build in time for the climb to the Spanish Mosque and a slow mint tea on the main square; the town rewards an unhurried pace.
Which option should you pick?
- Solo or a couple, watching the budget: the CTM coach — but book the seat ahead, this leg sells out.
- Fast and cheap, happy to change in Tétouan: a shared grand taxi, or hire the whole car to skip the wait.
- Family, small group, or doing it as a day trip: a private car — the per-person maths usually wins and you keep the afternoon free.
- You want photo stops on the Rif passes: only a private car gives you that.
- Looking for the train: there isn't one — take the train as far as Tangier and switch to the road here.
However you travel, the blue city is the north's signature day out from Tangier. See our private tours and destinations guide for Chefchaouen routes — as a relaxed day trip or a stop on the way south to Fes.
Frequently asked
How long does it take to get from Tangier to Chefchaouen?
By private car or transfer it is about 2 hours over roughly 110–115 km, climbing south-east through Tétouan into the Rif Mountains. A CTM coach takes around 3 hours, and a shared grand taxi (usually with a change in Tétouan) about 2 to 2.5 hours depending on how long you wait for the car to fill. There is no train to Chefchaouen — the nearest railhead is Tangier itself, so everyone makes the final leg by road.
Is there a train from Tangier to Chefchaouen?
No. Chefchaouen has no railway station and no track runs into the Rif. ONCF trains, including Tangier's Al Boraq high-speed line, serve the Atlantic corridor — Kenitra, Rabat, Casablanca — not the mountains. To reach the blue city you take a bus, a grand taxi or a private car from Tangier. Anyone telling you to 'catch the train to Chefchaouen' is mistaken; the journey is entirely by road.
How much does it cost to get from Tangier to Chefchaouen?
As an indicative 2026 guide: a CTM coach is roughly 45–80 dirhams per person (about 4–7 euros); a seat in a shared grand taxi is around 50–80 dirhams, or you can hire the whole taxi for roughly 600–900 dirhams. A private car transfer for the vehicle typically runs from about 1,000–1,800 dirhams one way depending on vehicle, season and whether you stop. Fares move with fuel and demand, so check current CTM and local rates before you travel.
What is the best way to get from Tangier to Chefchaouen?
For a budget solo trip, the CTM coach is the simplest and most reliable public option — book the seat in advance because the Tangier–Chefchaouen runs sell out. For couples, families or anyone wanting to leave when they like and stop for photos on the Rif passes, a private car is the better choice and is the only way to do it comfortably as a day trip with time in the town. A shared grand taxi is the fastest cheap option but usually means a change in Tétouan.
Can I visit Chefchaouen as a day trip from Tangier?
Yes, easily. At about two hours each way by car, you can leave Tangier mid-morning, spend the afternoon walking the blue medina and the Plaza Uta el-Hammam, climb to the Spanish Mosque for the sunset view, and be back in Tangier by evening. A private transfer or guided day trip is the practical way to do this; the bus timetable is tighter and leaves you less time in the town. Many visitors choose to stay one night instead, which the blue light rewards.
Where do buses and grand taxis to Chefchaouen leave from in Tangier?
CTM coaches leave from the CTM terminal, and other lines from the main Gare Routière (bus station) south of the city centre — not from Tanger Med, the ferry port 40 km east. Grand taxis for the Rif usually run via Tétouan, so you take one to Tétouan and change there for Chefchaouen. If you have just crossed on the ferry, confirm whether you have landed at Tangier Ville port or Tanger Med, as the latter needs a shuttle into the city first.
Is the road from Tangier to Chefchaouen difficult or winding?
The first stretch to Tétouan is fast motorway along the coast. After Tétouan the road climbs into the Rif and becomes a steady mountain route with bends and gradients — scenic rather than treacherous, but enough to unsettle anyone prone to motion sickness. It is well surfaced and used by coaches daily. If you are driving yourself, allow a little extra time for the climb and the slower trucks, and keep your fuel topped up before leaving Tétouan.
