The Lower Cascades
A relatively easy riverside walk from the Akchour trailhead leads to the lower falls, where water drops into clear pools fringed by café shacks. It is the most popular and family-friendly stretch of the gorge.

Things to do · Akchour
Deep in the Rif behind Chefchaouen, the gorges of Talassemtane National Park hide the Akchour waterfalls and the dramatic God's Bridge rock arch. It is the wildest day out in Tangier's southern orbit — a hiking escape into green mountains and cold turquoise pools.

A relatively easy riverside walk from the Akchour trailhead leads to the lower falls, where water drops into clear pools fringed by café shacks. It is the most popular and family-friendly stretch of the gorge.
A longer, rockier trail of two to three hours each way climbs through the gorge to the Grand Cascade, a tall waterfall plunging into a pool below sheer cliffs — the reward for the park's most rewarding hike.
A vast natural rock arch carved by the river over millennia spans the canyon, with the water rushing far below. A separate trail from Akchour reaches it, one of the most spectacular natural features in the Rif.
The wider park protects rare Moroccan fir forests, limestone peaks and deep gorges across the western Rif. The Akchour valley is its most accessible corner, the gateway to its trails and viewpoints.
Simple wooden café-shacks line the lower trail, serving tagine, omelettes and mint tea on platforms over the water. They make a natural turnaround point for those not tackling the full hikes.
The river's turquoise pools are bracingly cold but irresistible on a warm day. The calmer pools near the lower cascades are the usual spot for a dip between stretches of walking.
Akchour is most easily reached via the blue town of Chefchaouen, around 30 km away. Many visitors pair a morning in the Rif gorges with an afternoon in Chaouen's indigo lanes.
The Akchour waterfalls lie inside Talassemtane National Park in the Rif Mountains, about 30 km from Chefchaouen and roughly a three-hour drive south of Tangier. The trailhead is at the village of Akchour, where the gorge walks begin.
The lower cascades are an easy-to-moderate riverside walk suitable for most. The Grand Cascade is a tougher two-to-three-hour hike each way over rocky, uneven ground, and God's Bridge is a separate trail — both require reasonable fitness and good footwear.
It is a long day. Tangier to Akchour is around three hours each way via Chefchaouen, leaving limited time on the trails. Many travellers prefer to base in Chefchaouen overnight and visit Akchour from there, or combine the two over a full day with an early start.
Spring and autumn are ideal, when the river runs strong and temperatures are comfortable for hiking. Summer is hot but good for swimming in the pools, while winter rains can swell the river and make some trails slippery.
