Things to do in Tangier

Tangier curves around a wide bay, and its long city beach gives way to wilder Atlantic sands just west of the capes. From the palm-lined corniche to the surf below Cap Spartel, here is where to swim, walk and watch the strait from the shore.

The best of Tangier

01Beach

Tangier City Beach

The long crescent of sand fronting the bay runs from the port toward the marina, backed by the Avenue Mohammed VI corniche. It is busy and social in summer — football on the sand, cafés along the promenade and the city rising behind.

02Coast

Corniche promenade

The palm-lined Avenue Mohammed VI traces the bay for several kilometres, a favourite evening stroll for Tangerines. The walk links the old port and marina with the beach hotels, with the Rif hills and ferry lights as backdrop.

03Coast

Tangier Marina Bay

The redeveloped port quarter has reopened the seafront with a marina, walkways and the old fishing harbour alongside. It is the smartest stretch of the corniche to wander at dusk, with yachts, cafés and views back to the medina.

04Beach

Achakar Beach

Below Cap Spartel, around 14 km west, this broad Atlantic beach trades the city bustle for open sands and ocean surf. Cafés on the bluff above serve grilled fish, and the sunsets here are the finest near the city.

05Beach

Robinson Beach

Just beyond the Caves of Hercules, Robinson Plage is a long Atlantic strand framed by low cliffs and rock arches. Quieter than the city beach and good for a bracing walk, with seasonal beach cafés.

06Beach

Sol beach & Malabata

East of the centre toward Cap Malabata, the shoreline opens into calmer Mediterranean-facing beaches backed by hotels. The drive out to the Malabata lighthouse gives a fine panorama back across the bay to the old town.

07Activity

Surfing west of the city

The Atlantic stretch from Achakar toward Cap Spartel picks up clean swell, and small surf outfits run lessons and board hire in season. It is an easy introduction to Morocco's Atlantic surf without leaving the Tangier orbit.

Frequently asked

Which is the best beach in Tangier?

For convenience, the city beach on the bay is right beside the corniche and centre. For cleaner water, open sand and better sunsets, head west to Achakar and Robinson beaches below Cap Spartel, about a 20-minute drive from the centre.

Can you swim at Tangier city beach?

People do swim at the city beach in summer, but it sits inside a busy working bay, so many visitors prefer the cleaner Atlantic water at Achakar and Robinson beaches to the west, or the Mediterranean-facing beaches out toward Cap Malabata.

Is the Tangier corniche worth walking?

Yes — the corniche along Avenue Mohammed VI is one of the city's best free pleasures, especially at sunset, linking the marina and old port with the beach and offering views over the bay to the Rif and across the strait.

Are there Atlantic and Mediterranean beaches near Tangier?

Yes. Because Tangier sits at the corner where the two seas meet, you can reach Atlantic surf beaches west of Cap Spartel and calmer Mediterranean-facing beaches east toward Cap Malabata, both within a short drive of the city.
