Things to do in Tangier

Step off the ferry from Tarifa and you have a single day to take the measure of the White City. This compact loop threads the kasbah, the medina and the Atlantic capes into one well-paced day, ending with mint tea on a cliff above the Strait of Gibraltar.

The best of Tangier

01Kasbah

Morning in the kasbah

Start high. Climb to the fortified citadel before the heat and the crowds, when the lanes are quiet and the light is clean. Step into the Kasbah Museum, set in the old Dar el-Makhzen palace, for a quick grounding in the city's many layers.

02Medina

Down through the medina

From the kasbah gate, let the whitewashed lanes pull you downhill toward the port. There is no single correct route — that is the point. Aim loosely for the Petit Socco and let the medina do the navigating.

03Food

Coffee at Petit Socco

Pause at the little square that once drew Beat writers and spies in equal measure. Order a coffee at one of the faded cafés ringing it and watch the medina's foot traffic flow past for half an hour.

04Medina

Grand Socco crossing

Pass through Bab el-Fahs onto the Grand Socco, the broad plaza where the old town meets the modern city. The Cinema Rif on its edge is a fine point to orient yourself before the afternoon.

05Food

Lunch on Boulevard Pasteur

Climb into the ville nouvelle for lunch, then stroll the Terrasse des Paresseux — the 'Idlers' Terrace' — where old cannons line a clifftop balcony with views over the port and, on clear days, the Spanish shore.

06Coast

Drive to Cap Spartel

Use the afternoon for the coast. About 14 km west of the centre, the Cap Spartel lighthouse stands where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet — a 20-minute drive through the wooded Rmilat hills.

07Coast

Caves of Hercules

Just south of the cape, these part-natural, part-quarried sea caves open to the ocean through an aperture shaped like the map of Africa. It is the city's signature photograph and an easy add-on to Cap Spartel.

08Food

Sunset at Café Hafa

Close the day where Tangier has closed countless days since 1921 — on the stepped terraces of Café Hafa, with a glass of mint tea and the sun dropping into the strait toward Spain.

Frequently asked

Is one day enough for Tangier?

One day is enough to see the headline sights — the kasbah, the medina, the Socco squares and the Cap Spartel coast — if you keep moving and use a car or guide for the western capes. To slow down and absorb the city's atmosphere, two days is more comfortable.

Can I visit Tangier as a day trip from Spain?

Yes. Fast ferries from Tarifa reach Tangier Ville port in about an hour, landing you within walking distance of the medina. A day trip is very doable, though you should mind the ferry timetable and the one-hour time difference with Spain.

What is the best order to see Tangier in a day?

Start high in the kasbah, walk down through the medina to the Socco squares and the seafront terrace, then drive out to Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules in the afternoon, finishing with sunset at Café Hafa.

Do I need a guide for a day in Tangier?

The medina is walkable on your own, but a local guide and driver make a single day far more efficient — handling the western capes by car and steering you past the persistent faux-guides around the port and Grand Socco.
