Why Meknes
Travellers working south from Tangier tend to make straight for Fes and skip Meknes — which is exactly why it's the quietest and most rewarding of the four imperial cities. The 17th-century sultan Moulay Ismail built it to rival Versailles: monumental gates, the colossal Heri es-Souani granaries and stables, and a lived-in medina with a fraction of Fes's crowds. It also makes the natural base for the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy hilltop town of Moulay Idriss, both 30 minutes off — the same Roman and dynastic threads that reach the far north at Lixus and Moulay Bousselham.
What to see
Often called the finest monumental gate in the country — a wall of green-and-white zellige and carved stone facing the old mechouar, the imperial north at its most theatrical.
Moulay Ismail's vast vaulted granaries and stables beside a huge reflecting reservoir built to water the city through a siege — engineering on a scale the northern towns never attempted.
A UNESCO site of mosaics, triumphal arches and olive groves — the best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco, 30 minutes off, and a cousin to the Atlantic ruins at Lixus near Larache.
A sacred whitewashed town spilling over twin hills, burial place of the founder of the first Moroccan dynasty — the spiritual root of the country that the north's Idrisid history also traces.

Yes — it's the calmest of the imperial cities, with monumental gates and granaries and almost none of the medina hustle of Fes. Travellers heading south from the north often find it the pleasant surprise of the trip; paired with Volubilis it makes a superb day.
About 30 km, or 30–40 minutes by car. Most visitors take in Meknes, Volubilis and Moulay Idriss together on one private day from Fes — a Roman-and-imperial counterpart to the Lixus ruins up on the northern coast.
