Why Cap Malabata is the two-seas viewpoint

The headland that closes Tangier Bay

Cap Malabata is the green headland on the eastern, Mediterranean side of Tangier Bay. A lighthouse stands on the point and, just inland, the photogenic ruins of an early-20th-century "castle" — a folly built to look medieval — frame the view back over the bay toward the white city.

Where you can see two seas and two continents

The Strait of Gibraltar is the narrow channel where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea and Africa faces Europe across roughly 14 km of water. From the lookouts around Cap Malabata, on a clear day, the Spanish coast near Tarifa and the Rock of Gibraltar sit plainly on the horizon — two seas, two continents, in one view.

An easy half-day watching the world's busiest narrows

The strait is one of the busiest shipping lanes on earth, and the Tarifa and Algeciras ferries thread across it all day. The corniche drive, the lighthouse, the castle ruins and the viewpoints make a relaxed, scenic half-day with your own driver-guide — and it pairs perfectly with a Tangier morning or the Atlantic cape in the afternoon.

Make it a full two-seas day

Add Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

The Strait drive is a half-day on the Mediterranean side; many guests run it in the morning and add the Atlantic headland of Cap Spartel — the lighthouse where the ocean meets the sea, and the Caves of Hercules — in the afternoon. Both are real, bookable tours; pair them and we'll build the full day end to end.

Practical: planning the half-day

  • Morning for the clearest view. We usually run the trip in the morning, when the light over the strait is sharpest and the ferry traffic is busiest — but the timing is flexible if your day calls for it.
  • Bring binoculars for Spain. The Spanish coast and Gibraltar are visible across the narrows on a clear day; binoculars or a long lens bring Tarifa and the passing ferries right up close.
  • A layer for the headland. Cap Malabata is open to the strait and the breeze off the water can be brisk even on a warm day, so pack a windproof layer.
  • Tell us your arrival point. Hotel, Tangier Ville cruise port or Tanger Med — we build the half-day around your timing and send a written quote within 24 hours.

Frequently asked

What is the Strait of Gibraltar & Cap Malabata tour from Tangier?

It's the view-led coastal half-day east of the city. Tangier sits on a bay that curves east to Cap Malabata, the green headland that closes the bay on the Mediterranean side. Our private trip follows the corniche along the bay, climbs to the Cap Malabata lighthouse and the photogenic ruins of the early-20th-century "castle", and stops at viewpoints over the Strait of Gibraltar — one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world — with your own driver-guide, from $110 per person.

Can you really see Spain and Gibraltar from Cap Malabata?

On a clear day, yes. The Strait of Gibraltar narrows to about 14 km at its tightest point, so from the headlands east of Tangier the Spanish coast near Tarifa and the Rock of Gibraltar are visible across the water. Haze can soften the view, so a bright, clear morning gives you the best chance — bring binoculars if you have them.

How is this different from the Cap Spartel & Caves of Hercules trip?

They face opposite ways. Cap Spartel is the Atlantic headland west of Tangier, where the ocean meets the sea below the lighthouse and the Caves of Hercules. This Strait drive heads east along Tangier Bay to Cap Malabata, on the Mediterranean side, for the panorama straight across the narrows to Spain. They make a natural pair over one full day — one cape in the morning, the other in the afternoon.

What will we see at Cap Malabata?

The corniche drive around Tangier Bay, the Cap Malabata lighthouse, the romantic ruined 'castle' on the headland, and a sweep of viewpoints over the strait where you can watch the Tarifa and Algeciras ferries crossing the narrows. There are Mediterranean-side beaches east of the city along the same road. Your driver-guide sets the stops to your pace.

How long is the tour, and when does it run?

It's a half-day. We usually run it in the morning, when the light over the strait is clearest and the ferry traffic is lively, but timing is flexible — tell us your day when you book and we'll set the pickup to suit it. You're back in Tangier with plenty of the day left.

Is the trip private, and can it start from a cruise ship or Tanger Med?

Yes — it's entirely private, for one to six travellers, with the vehicle and driver-guide yours alone. We can begin and end at your Tangier hotel, the Tangier Ville cruise port or the Tanger Med ferry port, so cruise passengers and ferry arrivals from Spain can fit the strait and Cap Malabata into a few hours ashore. Tell us your arrival point and timing when you book.
