Overview
A half-day drive east along Tangier Bay to Cap Malabata, with the lighthouse, the ruined Malabata castle and views straight across the Strait of Gibraltar to Spain.
Tangier sits on a bay that curves east toward Cap Malabata, the green headland that closes the bay on the Mediterranean side. On a clear day you can see the Spanish coast and the Rock of Gibraltar across the water.
We follow the corniche along the bay, climb to the Cap Malabata lighthouse and the photogenic ruins of the early-20th-century 'castle', and stop at viewpoints over the strait — one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, with ferries crossing to Tarifa and Algeciras. A relaxed, view-led half-day.

Frequently asked
Questions about this tour.
Can you really see Spain from Cap Malabata?
On a clear day, yes — the Strait of Gibraltar is only about 14 km wide at its narrowest, so the Spanish coast near Tarifa and the Rock of Gibraltar are visible across the water from the headlands around Tangier.
Is this different from the Cap Spartel trip?
Yes. Cap Spartel is the Atlantic headland west of the city; this Strait drive heads east along Tangier Bay to Cap Malabata, on the Mediterranean side, for views straight across the narrows to Spain. They make a great pair over one day.
