Overview
A full day down the Atlantic coast to the hilltop Roman ruins of Lixus and the old Spanish-Moroccan port of Larache at the mouth of the Loukkos river.
South of Asilah, the Loukkos river meets the Atlantic at Larache, a port that still wears its Spanish-colonial past in its blue-and-white architecture and its faded Plaza de España (now Place de la Libération). On the hill above stand the ruins of Lixus — one of the oldest cities in Morocco, with Phoenician roots and substantial Roman remains, including baths, a theatre and the old salt-fish works.
We drive down the coast, climb the quiet, uncrowded site of Lixus with a guide, then explore Larache's old town and harbour, with time for a seafood lunch at the river mouth.

Frequently asked
Questions about this tour.
What is Lixus?
Lixus is an ancient city on a hill above the Loukkos river near Larache, with Phoenician origins and substantial Roman remains — a theatre-amphitheatre, baths, temples and large fish-salting works that produced garum. It's far quieter than Volubilis, so you often have the site nearly to yourself.
How far south is Larache from Tangier?
About 85 km, a little over an hour by road down the Atlantic coast. Combined with the Lixus ruins it makes a relaxed full-day outing.
