Overview
A half-day south to Asilah — the small, whitewashed Atlantic town with Portuguese ramparts, a blue-and-white medina and the murals painted each summer for its arts festival.
Asilah lies about 40 km south of Tangier on the Atlantic coast: a compact, immaculately whitewashed town wrapped in Portuguese ramparts. Its medina is famous for the murals that artists paint on its walls each year during the Asilah Arts Festival, so the lanes double as an open-air gallery.
We drive down the coast, walk the ramparts above the ocean, follow the painted lanes of the medina, and look out from the Borj el-Kamra. Time for a coffee or a seafood lunch by the water before heading back to Tangier.

Frequently asked
Questions about this tour.
What are the painted walls in Asilah?
Every summer the Asilah Arts Festival (Moussem Culturel International d'Assilah) invites artists to paint murals directly onto the whitewashed medina walls. Many are refreshed year to year, so the medina is a changing open-air gallery.
How far is Asilah from Tangier?
About 40 km, or roughly 45 minutes by road down the Atlantic coast — which makes it an easy half-day trip from the city.
