Overview

A slow weekend in the writers' Tangier — Café Hafa, the Petit Socco and the kasbah — with a literary guide and a guesthouse stay in the international-zone old town.

Tangier drew a century of writers and painters, from Henri Matisse to Paul Bowles and the Beat Generation. This small, slow weekend follows their city: the cafés where Bowles and Burroughs worked, the Grand Hôtel Villa de France where Matisse painted his Tangier window, the American Legation museum — the only US national historic landmark abroad — and the kasbah houses of the international-zone years.

You stay in a guesthouse near the Petit Socco, walk the old town with a guide who knows its literary history, and end each day at Café Hafa, on the cliffs above the strait, watching the light go down over Spain.

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

Who were the writers associated with Tangier?

Most famously the American composer-writer Paul Bowles, who lived here for decades, and the Beat writers who visited him — William Burroughs wrote much of Naked Lunch in Tangier, and Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg came too. Earlier, Henri Matisse painted some of his best-known works here. The weekend traces their Tangier.

What is the American Legation?

The Tangier American Legation is a historic building in the medina that served as the first American diplomatic post in Morocco — the oldest US diplomatic property in the world and the only US National Historic Landmark located abroad. It's now a museum and cultural centre.
