Why Agafay Desert

For travellers who've come the length of the country from the north but can't spare days for the true Sahara, the Agafay is Marrakech's desert in miniature: a rolling, rock-strewn moonscape just 40 minutes from the city, with the snow-capped High Atlas behind. It isn't sand dunes — it's a stone desert of khaki hills — but at sunset, with a lantern-lit camp, a camel on the ridgeline and the Atlas turning pink, it conjures much of the romance for a fraction of the travel. We use it as the quick desert fix at the end of a Tangier-to-Marrakech journey.

What to see

Highlights of Agafay Desert.

Lantern-lit luxury camps serving Moroccan dinners as the Atlas catches the last light — the signature Agafay evening, and an easy half-day from a Marrakech riad.

02

Camel & horse rides

Short rides across the khaki hills at golden hour, gentle enough for first-timers and families.

03

FAQ

Agafay Desertcommon questions.

Is the Agafay desert worth it?+

If you can't spare the days for the real Sahara, absolutely. The Agafay delivers a desert sunset, camps and camel rides 40 minutes from Marrakech — ideal at the end of a long journey down from the north — though it's rocky hills, not sand dunes.

Is Agafay a real desert with sand dunes?+

No — Agafay is a stone desert of rolling rocky hills, not Saharan sand. It's beautiful at sunset and supremely convenient, but for classic dunes you need to push on to Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) or Erg Chigaga in the far south.
