Why Ourika Valley

An hour south of Marrakech, the Ourika is the city's favourite mountain bolt-hole: a green river valley climbing into the High Atlas, lined with Berber villages, terraced gardens and restaurants whose tables sit right in the running water. At its head, Setti Fatma is the trailhead for the seven-waterfalls walk, and a Monday souk brings the whole valley to life. For travellers who knew the wooded Rif behind Tangier, the Ourika is the High Atlas in gentle miniature — higher, drier hills, but the same cool green relief.

What to see

Highlights of Ourika Valley.

01

Setti Fatma waterfalls

A scrambly climb above the village to a chain of seven cascades — the first is an easy 30 minutes, the rest for surer feet.

02

Riverside lunch

Tables set in the shallows of the Ourika for tagine and grilled meats with your feet in the cold running water — the High Atlas at its most relaxed.

03

Berber villages & gardens

Terraced saffron and herb gardens, a traditional Berber house to step inside, and an argan-oil or pottery co-op — the mountain south's living craft, distinct from the Andalusian north.

04

Monday souk

The weekly market at Tnine Ourika, a working Berber souk well off the tourist circuit.

FAQ

Ourika Valleycommon questions.

Is the Ourika Valley worth visiting?+

Yes — it's the easiest and greenest High Atlas day from Marrakech: Berber villages, a waterfall walk and a riverside lunch, all within an hour of the city. Ideal when you want mountains without the long drive to Imlil or Toubkal — the gentle end of the southern range.

Can you swim in the Ourika river?+

You can paddle and cool off in the shallows, and the riverside restaurants set their tables right in the water. The waterfalls upstream hold small pools, though the current can run strong after rain or snowmelt off the Atlas.
