Why Asilah

Asilah is the little town we slip down to from Tangier when we want sea air and quiet: 40 minutes south along the coast, the prettiest small port on the northern shore. Its compact whitewashed medina is wrapped in Portuguese ramparts, threaded with cobalt-blue doors and bougainvillea, the Atlantic breaking against the walls. Each summer an arts festival repaints the lanes with fresh murals, and the town stays calm and creative the rest of the year — the gentle coastal foil to busy Tangier and dense Fes, and an easy first overnight on any northern loop.

What to see

Highlights of Asilah.

01

The ramparts & medina

Walk the 15th-century Portuguese sea walls and the whitewashed lanes of blue doors and murals within — the same Atlantic-fortress heritage that built Essaouira far to the south, here on our own doorstep.

02

Street-art murals

Walls repainted each summer for the Asilah Arts Festival, turning the medina into an open-air gallery — the town's quiet creative streak, a northern cousin to the blue of Chefchaouen.

03

Paradise Beach

A long sweep of sand a short ride south, reached by horse-cart in high summer.

FAQ

Asilahcommon questions.

Is Asilah worth visiting?+

Yes — for our money it's the most charming small town on the northern coast: Portuguese ramparts, a whitewashed medina full of murals and an unhurried pace. We pair it constantly with Tangier and Chefchaouen at the start of a northern itinerary.

How far is Asilah from Tangier?+

About 45 km — 40 to 45 minutes by car or train from our base. It works as an easy half-day from Tangier or a calm overnight by the sea before heading inland.
