Why Casablanca

Casablanca is the country's largest city and its main international airport (CMN) — but for a northern itinerary it is just as often the rail crossroads, where the Al Boraq line from Tangier meets the routes south to Marrakech. This is not the postcard Morocco of medinas and minarets; it's a working modern metropolis of French-era art deco, a long Atlantic corniche and the staggering Hassan II Mosque rising straight out of the sea. Most travellers pass through in transit; we fold in a half-day for those who want to see it properly between the strait and the south.

What to see

Highlights of Casablanca.

01

Hassan II Mosque

One of the largest mosques on earth, its prayer hall built out over the Atlantic — and one of the few in Morocco non-Muslims may enter, on hourly guided tours. A scale of modern religious architecture nothing in the old north can match.

02

Art-deco downtown

Place Mohammed V, the French-protectorate apartment blocks and the Cinema Rialto — the same colonial-modern layer you meet in Tangier's ville nouvelle, here on a grand metropolitan scale.

03

Corniche & Ain Diab

The Atlantic boardwalk, the beach clubs of Ain Diab and the sunset terrace at Rick's Café, conjured from the film that gave the city its myth.

FAQ

Casablancacommon questions.

Is Casablanca worth visiting?+

For most travellers, a half-day around the Hassan II Mosque and the art-deco centre is plenty — save your nights for Tangier, Fes, Marrakech or Essaouira. Its real value on a northern route is as the rail pivot between the strait and the south.

Should I fly into Casablanca or fly into the north?+

Casablanca (CMN) carries the most long-haul flights and connects by fast train to Tangier in about two hours, so many of our guests fly into CMN and ride north to begin at the strait. Others fly straight into Tangier (TNG). We often book an open-jaw to save backtracking.
