Why Rabat
Rabat is the political capital and one of the gentlest cities in the country — and on a northern route it is barely more than two hours down the Al Boraq high-speed line from Tangier, which makes it an easy first or last stop. A UNESCO blend of Almohad walls, French-era avenues and clear Atlantic light, it holds the blue-and-white kasbah of the Udayas above the Bou Regreg, the unfinished Hassan Tower and the marble Mausoleum of Mohammed V. The medina is small, walkable and refreshingly free of hassle — a soft landing if you've just crossed from Spain, and a calm finale if you're heading home through Tangier.
What to see
A 12th-century fortified quarter of blue-washed lanes above the river mouth, with an Andalusian garden and a clifftop café over the Atlantic — the same blue-and-white palette you meet in Chefchaouen, by a calmer sea.
The minaret of a mosque the Almohads never finished, facing the exquisite royal mausoleum and its mounted sentries — the ceremonial heart of the capital.
Roman and Merinid ruins reclaimed by storks and wild gardens — the same Roman thread that runs up the coast to Lixus near Larache, here grown over and luminous.
A low-key medina for carpets and crafts, then the art-deco and modernist avenues of the protectorate — the colonial-modern city sitting easily beside the old.

Yes — and it's tailor-made for a northern itinerary: a hassle-free capital just down the fast line from Tangier. The UNESCO monuments, the Udayas kasbah and the Chellah ruins fill a rewarding day, and it's far calmer than Marrakech or Fes.
A full day covers the kasbah, the Hassan Tower and mausoleum, Chellah and the medina. An overnight lets you slow down for the riverfront and beaches — and makes Rabat a comfortable hinge between Tangier and the imperial cities.
