Why Ouarzazate & Aït Ben Haddou

Cross the Tizi n'Tichka and the green north feels a continent away: Ouarzazate is the dusty staging town for the Sahara, the Dadès and Drâa valleys and the kasbah road. Forty minutes on, Aït Ben Haddou is Morocco's most famous fortified village — a UNESCO ksar of earthen towers that has stood in for the ancient world in Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones (Yunkai), with the Atlas Studios next door. For travellers who began among the whitewash and sea light of Tangier, this is the other Morocco entirely: ochre, cinematic and bone-dry.

What to see

Highlights of Ouarzazate & Aït Ben Haddou.

01

Aït Ben Haddou ksar

The UNESCO earthen village climbing its hillside in tiers — go up to the granary at the summit for the long view across the river. Nothing in the north's stone-and-lime towns prepares you for architecture made entirely of mud and straw.

02

Atlas & CLA Studios

Working sound stages and standing exterior sets from Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Cleopatra and more — the desert backlot that has doubled for half the ancient world.

03

Telouet kasbah

A crumbling 19th-century Glaoui palace on the old caravan road, with carved interiors and almost none of the crowds of Aït Ben Haddou — our pick for travellers who like their kasbahs unpolished.

04

Dadès & Todra gorges

Two days further east: cliffside switchbacks, walnut groves and one of Morocco's most dramatic canyon walks, deep on the road toward the dunes.

Before you go

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: 4h drive from Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka (2,260m) — the great mountain crossing that separates the south from the imperial cities and the north
  • Best combined with: Sahara (Merzouga or Chigaga) — Ouarzazate is the natural overnight stop

FAQ

Ouarzazate & Aït Ben Haddoucommon questions.

Is Aït Ben Haddou worth the detour?+

Yes — it's the single most striking sight in southern Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage village. Most visitors give it an hour; we'd build the day around sunrise or sunset, when the mud-brick towers glow.

Can I visit Ouarzazate as a day trip from Marrakech?+

Technically (4h each way) but punishing, and you lose the magic-hour light that makes the place. Far better to stay a night and push on toward the Sahara the next day — this is the deep south, not a half-day out.
