Why Zagora

Zagora is the great oasis town of the Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river valley, which runs some 200 km south-east from Ouarzazate through a corridor of date-palm groves, mudbrick kasbahs and nomad camps before fading into pre-Saharan hammada. It's famous for the wry road sign — 'Tombouctou 52 jours', 52 days to Timbuktu by camel — and was a staging post on the trans-Saharan caravan route and a Saadian stronghold. Today it's the nearest town to Erg Chigaga, the remotest and wildest of Morocco's dune fields, reached by 4x4 from M'Hamid 98 km south. For a journey that may have begun on the Tangier ferry, this is its deep-desert far end.

What to see

Highlights of Zagora.

01

Draa Valley palm groves

One of the world's longest date-palm oases — the two-hour road south from Ouarzazate runs through hundreds of thousands of palms, kasbahs and gardens that have fed Berber and Arab communities for centuries. A green ribbon in the dry south, nothing like the Atlantic groves of the north.

02

Erg Chigaga expedition

Morocco's wildest dune field, 45 km south-west of M'Hamid by 4x4 track — a sea of sand to 100m with no tarmac and barely any camps. Our pick for travellers who've already made the long crossing south and want the deeper desert.

03

Jbel Zagora viewpoint

The flat-topped volcanic mesa over the town gives a panorama across the whole oasis corridor to the Anti-Atlas ridge — a steady 90-minute climb on a marked trail, best at first light.

04

M'Hamid and the nomadic piste

The last town on the tarmac, two hours further south — launch point for camel treks, overnight bivouacs and the long piste west to Foum Zguid, deep in country few northern visitors ever see.

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: 2h from Ouarzazate on the N9; 6h from Marrakech via Tizi n'Tichka and Ouarzazate
  • 4x4 required: The piste to Erg Chigaga is unpaved and requires a high-clearance 4x4 — we arrange the vehicle and an experienced driver
  • Best combined with: Ouarzazate, Aït Ben Haddou and the Dadès Gorge on a full southern loop
  • Currency: Cash only in M'Hamid; ATMs in Zagora town centre

FAQ

Zagoracommon questions.

What is the difference between Zagora and Merzouga for a Sahara trip?+

Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) is easier to reach and more photographed — the classic Morocco dune shot. Zagora is the launch point for Erg Chigaga, which is larger, wilder, far less visited and needs a 4x4. Having already crossed the country from the north, many of our guests treat Chigaga as the next level.

How far is Zagora from Marrakech?+

About 370 km by road — a 6-hour drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass via Ouarzazate. We split it across two days, folding in Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate; from the north it sits at the very end of the run south.

Is Zagora worth visiting beyond the dunes?+

Yes — the Draa Valley palm corridor is one of Morocco's great drives, the Jbel Zagora viewpoint is memorable, and the kasbah villages strung along the valley are authentic and little-visited.

What is the best time of year to visit Zagora?+

October through March, when days are comfortable (18–28°C). July and August regularly top 42°C — a fierce contrast to the breezy northern coast — and many camps close, with outdoor activity limited to early morning.
