Good to know

Practical notes

  • This is a one-way route — fly or take the train back from Fes, or continue your trip south from there.
  • Tangier and Fes are linked by Al Boutouristic and ONCF trains, but the Chefchaouen leg in the middle needs a car or driver.
  • A licensed guide is essential in Fes el-Bali — it's a genuine labyrinth of thousands of lanes with no cars.

Frequently asked

How do you get from Tangier to Fes?

Directly there are frequent trains (around four hours), but the scenic route stops in Chefchaouen midway, which needs a car or private driver. Either way, five days lets you see the north properly en route.

Is it better to start in Tangier or Fes?

Starting in Tangier works well for arrivals from Spain by ferry — you move from the strait through Chefchaouen and the Rif into Fes, ending at one of Morocco's great medinas.
