Overview
A full day from Tangier into the Rif mountains to Chefchaouen — the blue-painted medina, the Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the kasbah and the Spanish Mosque viewpoint.
Chefchaouen, the famous blue-washed town, sits about two hours south of Tangier in the Rif mountains. We leave the city early, climb through olive country into the mountains, and arrive with the morning still soft on the cobalt lanes.
With a local guide you'll wander the blue medina, the Plaza Uta el-Hammam with its kasbah and great mosque, and — for those who want it — the short uphill walk to the Spanish Mosque for the classic view back over the town. Free time for lunch and photos before the drive back to Tangier.

Frequently asked
Questions about this tour.
How long is the drive from Tangier to Chefchaouen?
About two to two and a half hours each way through the Rif mountains. It's a full day out; we leave Tangier early to make the most of the cooler, quieter morning in the blue medina.
Why is Chefchaouen painted blue?
There are several stories — a tradition brought by Jewish residents, a way to keep houses cool, or simply to repel mosquitoes — but whatever the origin, the medina has been repainted in shades of blue for generations and it's now the town's signature.
Is the Spanish Mosque walk hard?
It's a short but uphill walk of roughly 20–30 minutes from the medina to the viewpoint. It's optional; those who'd rather not climb can relax in the Plaza Uta el-Hammam instead.
