Why this is the classic Tangier excursion
The lighthouse at the corner of Africa
Cap Spartel is the north-west tip of the African continent, the headland that marks the western mouth of the Strait of Gibraltar — the conventional point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. A 19th-century lighthouse stands right on the cape, with the open ocean on one side and the strait curving away toward Spain on the other.
The Caves of Hercules and the Africa-shaped sea window
Just below the cape at Achakar, the Caves of Hercules open to the Atlantic through a sea-facing gap shaped — depending on who you ask — like the map of Africa. The cave is part natural and part carved by centuries of stone-cutting for millstones, and it is one of the most photographed spots on the whole northern coast.
An easy half-day on the Atlantic
Only about 12 km from the city, the cape and caves make a relaxed half-day with your own driver-guide — the coast road through the Rmilat forest, photo stops at the lighthouse, a walk through the caves and the long Atlantic beach at Achakar. Pair it with a Tangier morning for a full, easy first day.
Make it a full Tangier day
Add the kasbah and medina in the morning
The cape and caves are a half-day, so many guests run them in the afternoon and spend the morning walking Tangier's old city. This is a real, bookable tour too — pair the two and we'll build the day end to end.
Half dayKasbah & Medina, on Foot
A guided half-day on foot through Tangier's old city — the Grand Socco, the medina lanes, the Petit Socco cafés and the kasbah with its 17th-century Dar el Makhzen palace.

Practical: planning the half-day
- Afternoon for the light. We usually run the trip in the afternoon so the Atlantic and the cave opening photograph best — but morning departures are fine on request if your day calls for it.
- A layer for the headland. Cap Spartel is open to the ocean and the wind off the Atlantic can be brisk even on a warm day, so bring a windproof layer.
- Closed shoes for the caves. The cave floor can be damp and uneven, so wear closed shoes with grip — and keep your camera ready for the Africa-shaped window.
- Tell us your arrival point. Hotel, Tangier Ville port or Tanger Med — we build the half-day around your timing and send a written quote within 24 hours.
Frequently asked
What is the Cap Spartel and Caves of Hercules tour from Tangier?
It's the classic Tangier half-day on the coast. About 12 km west of the city the land runs out at Cap Spartel — the lighthouse headland marking the north-west corner of Africa, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea — and just below it, at Achakar, the Caves of Hercules open to the sea through the famous Africa-shaped window. Our private trip takes in the lighthouse, the caves and the Achakar beach with your own driver-guide, from $120 per person.
Do the Atlantic and Mediterranean really meet at Cap Spartel?
Cap Spartel is the north-west corner of Africa — the headland that marks the western mouth of the Strait of Gibraltar, the conventional meeting point of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. There's no visible line drawn in the water, but it is the geographic corner where the two seas join, with the 19th-century lighthouse standing right on the point.
What are the Caves of Hercules and the Africa-shaped opening?
The Caves of Hercules at Achakar are a part-natural, part-man-made sea cave west of Tangier. Their most photographed feature is a sea-facing opening said to resemble the map of Africa. Stone was quarried here for millstones over centuries, which shaped the cave you walk through today. The cave entrance is included on our trip.
How long is the tour and when does it run?
It's a half-day. We usually run it in the afternoon so the light on the Atlantic and the cave opening is at its best, but morning departures are fine on request — just tell us when you book and we'll set the pickup time to suit your day.
Is the trip private, and can it start from a cruise ship or Tanger Med?
Yes — it's entirely private, for one to six travellers, with the vehicle and driver-guide yours alone. We can begin and end at your Tangier hotel, the Tangier Ville port or the Tanger Med ferry port, so cruise passengers and ferry arrivals from Spain can fit the cape and the caves into a few hours ashore. Tell us your arrival point and timing when you book.
Can we combine Cap Spartel with the medina or other Tangier sights?
Easily. The cape and caves are a half-day, so many guests pair the afternoon trip with our morning Kasbah & Medina walk for a complete first day in Tangier, or add the Strait of Gibraltar drive east to Cap Malabata. Just ask and we'll build the day around you.
