Why Atlas Mountains

The High Atlas heaves straight up from the Marrakech plain, and for northerners it is a revelation: where the Rif behind Tangier and Chefchaouen tops out in forested hills, here the range climbs to Jbel Toubkal at 4,167m, the highest peak in North Africa. Within an hour of Marrakech you reach Imlil at 1,740m, ringed by Berber villages and walnut and cherry orchards, with trails fanning out above. The Atlas suits a day out, a weekend at a mountain lodge, or a proper 2–3 day trek with guides and mules — the alpine south to balance a journey that may have started on the Mediterranean shore.

What to see

Highlights of Atlas Mountains.

01

Imlil & the Toubkal valley

The trekkers' base village: lunch at Kasbah du Toubkal, an easy walk to Aroumd or higher to the Sidi Chamharouch shrine — high-mountain country far above anything the northern Rif offers.

02

Summit Jbel Toubkal

A two-day, mule-supported ascent to 4,167m — a walk rather than a climb in summer, but ice axe and crampons in winter. The roof of North Africa, and the highest you can stand on a Morocco trip.

03

Ourika valley & Setti Fatma

An easier day nearer Marrakech: a river-bank lunch, the Monday Berber market and the seven-waterfalls walk above Setti Fatma.

04

Asni & Ouirgane

Lower villages with boutique mountain lodges — gentle territory for those who'd rather settle in than summit.

FAQ

Atlas Mountainscommon questions.

Can you climb Toubkal without a guide?+

No — since the 2018 incident a licensed guide is mandatory. We work with a small panel of certified local mountain guides we've known for years.

Is the Atlas worth visiting if I don't trek?+

Very much so — Asni, Ouirgane and Ourika all have comfortable lodges with short, easy walks. Many of our guests use the Atlas as a quiet two-night decompression after the intensity of Marrakech, much as they'd use Chefchaouen in the north.
