Tetouan sits about 60 km east of Tangier, toward the Mediterranean and the foot of the Rif. The drive is roughly an hour each way on a good road, which makes it one of the quickest and easiest day trips from the city — comfortably a half-day in the UNESCO medina with an afternoon on the coast at Martil, and still home in Tangier for the evening.

Tetouan is the most authentic and least touristy of the easy day trips from Tangier. Its whitewashed medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rebuilt by Andalusian refugees from Granada, with a living craft tradition and very few tour groups. Chefchaouen is the famous blue town (a longer, two-hour drive into the Rif); Asilah is the small, mural-painted Atlantic town. Tetouan is the one for travellers who want a genuine, working Andalusian medina rather than a photo set — and it pairs naturally with the Mediterranean beach at Martil.

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal — warm, clear days for the medina and the coast without the peak heat. Summer is fine and best if you want beach time at Martil, though midday in the medina is hot. Winter days can be cool and occasionally wet at the foot of the Rif, but the medina is just as atmospheric and far quieter. We run the trip year-round.
